The Circle: publish your poems to your friends

The Circle and the restore code (below) come with version 1.1. Update the app from the App Store if you do not see them.

In the Circle you publish your own poems to the friends who follow you; they see them in their friends feed, like the ones they like and comment on them. There is no public page and no people search: nobody can follow you without your own code.

Circle rules

You agree to them before you publish your first poem:

  1. Only your own poems. Publish poetry you wrote yourself. Do not publish other people’s poems, or poems by poets whose work is under copyright.
  2. No insults and no hija’ (satire aimed at someone). No abuse or contempt for a person, a tribe or the people of a country.
  3. No politics and no religious or sectarian polemics.
  4. Nothing inappropriate, and no spam or ads.

The same rules apply to comments. We may remove anything that breaks them, and stop repeat offenders from using the Circle, without notice. Names, titles, verses and comments pass through a filter for inappropriate words before they are published.

Reporting and blocking

After a report: we review every report ourselves within 24 hours. When three different people report a poem or a comment, it is hidden from everyone automatically until we review it. The reported person is not told who reported them. For anything urgent, email asimapps.dev@gmail.com.

If you find your poem, or a poem whose rights you hold, published in the Circle under someone else’s name, email asimapps.dev@gmail.com with the subject “Copyright takedown request”, and include:

We hide the poem within 24 hours while we check, then remove it if your claim holds, and we may stop repeat offenders. You can also report it in the app with “Not their own poem”.

The restore code: your profile on your new phone

A verse is under the wrong poet

Tap the verse and choose “Report a wrong attribution”. Your mail app opens with a draft that has the verse, the poem number and its source; add your reason or source and send it. We review reports and fix the library in a coming update. “Source” shows where the poem comes from and how we checked who wrote it. Circle poems always show their author’s Circle name and a “From your Circle” badge, and never mix with the library’s poets.

Do I need an account? Where is my profile saved?

No account and no sign-in. Your profile (saved verses, lists, reading diary and notebook) is saved on your phone, and your iPhone backup includes it. From version 1.1 there is also a copy encrypted with your restore code that we cannot read, and only what you publish in the Circle is kept on our server, for your friends.

How do I move my profile to a new phone?

How do I share my profile?

On your profile, tap “Share your profile”: a story image, a square image, your profile link or a QR code. Friends who have the app open the link in the app; others see your profile in their browser. Every verse also has a card you can share with one tap, always with its poet’s name.

A friend’s link opened in the browser

Long-press the link and choose to open it in Abyat (iOS remembers). Or copy the link, then in the app open “Friends” and “Open a copied link”. A Circle invite link that opens in the browser shows the code: copy it, then in the app choose Circle → “Have a code?”.

Something inappropriate on someone’s profile

On a friend’s profile you can hide it, block it (it disappears, and its link no longer opens for you), or choose “Report content”, which opens a ready email to us. Names, bios and list names pass through a filter for inappropriate words. In the Circle, use report and block (above).

Ads

A small banner on browse lists only; never in the duel, in your notebook or in the Circle. On the card screen, an optional ad opens the locked colours for a day, and it only starts when you tap its button. We ask for non-personalised, family-safe ads. If Settings shows “Ad and privacy choices”, you can change your choice there.

The duel (مساجلة)

We say a verse, and you answer with a verse that starts with its rhyme letter before the time runs out. A verse the library knows scores full points and we tell you who wrote it; your own verse is accepted for fewer points. Or duel with friends on one phone, 2 to 6 players.

Language

The app is in Arabic and English; change the language in Settings. The verses always stay in Arabic.

Sources and licences

The poem texts come from Arabic Wikisource under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the poems themselves are in the public domain. Details in Settings → “Licences and credits”. Circle poems belong to the people who wrote them.
